    Hello,

After all the good advices I got from you guys, I am seriously considering ordering your software.

One question though. On the French dealer website, there are 2 versions at the same price of TTQV Standard (I don't think that I can justify going extra for the power user version... :( ). One is for download and the other one if for a CD, a manual and so on... Said like this, it should be a no-brainer ! Just go for the one with the manual !

Alas right now, I am away from home and for quite a long time... Thus the download version sounds great...

But as we say in French, I would like to have "the butter and the money of the butter"... That is buy the version with CD and manual and just get the licence number through an email whereas the manual will be waiting back for me in France for when I'll be there. Also, the download version comes without the NAVTEQ database which could be of interest to me...

So, is it possible to order the complete version (hopefully with an English or French manual), have it delivered in France and buy an extra licence that would allow me to keep using the version that I have right now ? I saw that the cost of that was about 15€ which is acceptable to me but I want to know if that is the correct way of doing it... ;)

There are programs to combine scanned maps, reproject them and cut them into tiles - like GlobalMapper.

One more thing to look inot then... ;)

Ok... I guess that I don't understand that National Grid Requirement... Is Pulkovo not a National Grid ? I know it is a Datum, but I would have thought that it was also a National Grid...

I guess that I should do more reading ! The fine art of calibrating a map is still unknown to me !!! Is there a good book in French or English on that subject ?

Alternatively, I could send you those files, but they are a bit big...

    Quote from "jockel"

it does not work that way

Somehow, I knew it was not going to be THAT easy ! :D

    Quote from "jockel"

those maps must be of exactly the same resolution

    I think they are...

    Quote from "jockel"

must be in exactly the same rotation,

    I think they are too...

    Quote from "jockel"

must be calibrated in on of those national meter grids,

I think this is the case...

    Quote from "jockel"

must fit together exactly pixel by pixel and must be in the same size (pixel by pixel). All maps to be joined must be exact fractions of a big whole map.

I honestly think that this is the case. I happen to came upon a complete set of scanned maps of the area I am working in. By the look of those, they must have been scanned professionnaly with map data and so on. But they do cover a big area (Country size...) and maybe there is some problem covering such a big area at such a size (100.000)

    Hello,

This is probably again a dumb question...

I do have a problem with some function of the TTQV Version 4.

I have calibrated 3 maps which would form a kind of inverted L big map. Those maps are all in the same scale, same datum and with the same kind of names.
When I try to combine them as per the method page 109 of the manual I get the message that you can see on the picture. If I press "Ignore", I get an error message... Surely the size of the respective files is not an indication...

    example

What am I doing wrong, please ? the manual says that this kind of "Big Map" "refer to identical grid and resolution calibrations" Is that a problem with the fact that those maps might not be at exactly the same BPI ratio or something like that ? If I use those maps to plot waypoint that are over them, the waypoint gets plotted correctly on each map.

So I must be doing something wrong there, but I don't get it...

Should I try "assembling" those "maps" using a graphic software and calibrate the result ?

    Hello again !

I guess that, as they said, a picture is worth a thousand words...

    So here goes !

    example

 Sorry if that picture is a bit big...

But frankly, the pleasure of being able to succeed in doing that is even greater !

I'll expirement with all that probably later on tonight... ;) But that is as usual, great advices !

That said that map was fairly straight for me. At least the line for that Warsaw Pact Grid System are... And honestly even with a calibration on 2x2 the variation are quite small now and can probably be attributed to precisions problem with the GPS reception... It is THAT good and I am quite impressed and excited at the outcomes I get...
Also, and I might say that I am a bit lazy with that, but I certainly did not see any tick marks... I could send that map as they certainly don't seem to have any copyright attached, but the file would probably be too big !

The export to PW will come later on... I DO have a job and even though GPS plays a big role in it, it is still necessary for me to do the rest of it ! ;-)

But I can say that once again, you have been going the extra-mile that makes all the difference between you and some other providers of GPS solution. I am especially thinking of a company that make a product only for Macs... :-? :-(

    Thanks again !

I used UTM because I was told that it was UTM... Seems it is not... 8-O Guess this shows that not all the people around me were knowledgeable... ;-)

I did a 2x2 calibration because I had coordinates for the four corners and it worked all right !

Thanks again guys ! Now, one more test (Transfer of the map to the PathAway program...) and then you'll be able to test the validity of the credit on my credit card ! ;-)

    Thanks again !!!

    Hello,

I am still trying out the demo version and I do have a problem with map calibration...

I know that this is probably quite standard for beginners but even after reading the manual I still have not found the solution. Can you help ?

    The problem is as follow...

I have a Russian topo map of an area.
    It is a 1:100.000 map.
It is in a JPG file.
I want to import and calibrate the map so that I can use it to plot tracks on.
I do the import using the following options :
    - Map datum : PULKOVO 1942 as the map legend says "System Koordinat 1942"
    - UTM calibration using 4 points

Then I take the track made on the field using a Seidio RBT2010 and a Palm Treo running PathAway 4 complete version.

Here is what I get in final :
    [Blocked Image: http://wisup.net/File_1/WIS_FR/2006/Images1/40806/gugudYKXJ0D230820066102411330.jpg]

No I wonder where the problem comes from...

Bad calibration ? Maybe but I checked a few times and it seems correct to me...
Problem with overlaying data in WGS84 (The PathAway track) over a map in PULKOVO 1942 ? But it seems that TTQV is quite able to do that...

I think that there may be a problem with the UTM overlay on the Russian topo maps which screw the calibration procedure but I think that the error is more probably between the chair and the keyboard... ;-) Can someone point me in the right direction ?

    Thanks for any help !

MacGPSpro does not save its map in CSV but only some of its files likes Track Logs or Waypoints... Those are the ones I want to get back and I'll find a way... ;-)

For the manual, you are quite right and I have already started the learning process ! I'll find some high-speed printer, print it out and read and practice at the same time. An electronic manual is good but sometimes not enough. Especially as the screen can get quite cluttered !

Understood what I'll get from an online registration process... That sounds OK by me. So no big deal ! I'll register quite soon probably.
In fact, I think that once I'll try calibrating one of those Soviet Topo Map I must use and import the MacGPSpro data unto it, and if the result is what I expect which seems to be the case, that will be more than enough for me...

Right now, the basic functions which I used to do with a Garmin 201 Geko and MacGPSpro are more than covered with the team PathAway/TTQV and that is already quite good ! Even tough I am using this setup on a Mac with Parallels. Much faster than under Virtual PC !

Adding map unto it will only make it better ! The cherry on the cake... ;-)

Thanks again for all the help ! That is VERY much appreciated !!

I did the unzipping and placed the ECWP.qu4 file in the TTQV4 folder. Now, I suppose (But I still haven't done the RTFM... ;-) ) that I will have to import the maps ?
Anyway, I am playing out with some other options so far...

There is something that I will need to do. I was a Mac user of a program called MacGPSpro and this one saves its file in a format which is, of course, quite different from yours. Those files can be opened using Excel or any Text editor as they are mostly CSV file. They can also be exported to Google Earth format. I will have to look into the possibility to open those files in TTQV4.
    I need that data...

    One last thing though...

If I buy from Georgia, will I get a License through email and additionnal download links ? The CD/DVD/Whatever could go to my home address in France... ;-) But the complete version, I'll need in Georgia... And that means download for me...

Guys, you are great ! ;-) Really !

When you mean "until map revision 3!" That means Revision 3 included or no ? ;-) Before I go and spend some more money... ;-)
I guess that the non-support of older versions come from problems with licensing fees ?

As for that link, I don't know how it works but the file is now in the TTQV4 folder...

Anyway, tomorrow, I'll be flying back to Georgia and do some more hard work with TTQV. If it passes my requirements, and I think it will, I'll be a new customer quite soon !  ;-)

    Quote from "jockel"

Well, maybe, because there is nothing special with russian military maps this chapter was never completed? I have to look into it.

No problem... I just mention it because I saw it... ;-)

    Quote from "jockel"

Simply referr to the common chapters about referencing maps. Russian maps go simply with 3x3 calibration and Map-Datum Pulkovo1942

Yes, I'll do that as it is important for me ! I work in Georgia with the UN right now and all our maps are Russian one (Of course...) But the GPS are often in WGS 84 and thus there are localisation problems sometimes...
I can mix Datum for the map (Pulkovo1942) and Datum for the GPS (WGS84) right ? I mean, that the map can be calibrated with one and the tracks might come from the other system and still mix seamlessly ? With the plotted position being the correct one ?

    Quote from "jockel"

    No, unfortunately, definitely not !
But there are IGN maps published by "MemoryMap", which TTQV can read and an ambitioned user can calibrate.

"Memory Map" ? Well I don't know those... I'll look into it !
But you can confirm that I can open the one from Cartoexploreur, right ?

I do have some JPG made of Russian maps... ;-) What I am saying is that on page 39 there is a reference to some "Russian Ordnance Maps" section of the manual... That the Index says on page 328 to look for it on page 91 and that on said page 91, there is nothing regarding those Russian Maps... ;-)

As for the Georando DVD, it seems I was mistaken by having read to fast the program description. I remembered reading that TTQV could read IGN Maps. And Georando is the new product from IGN that endeavors to cover France at the 1/25.000... Seems though that what TTQV can read are the older *.byo files from Cartoexplorer.

See Georando and Cartexplorer there : http://www.ign.fr/rubrique.asp?rbr_id=1211&lng_id=EN

Maybe something for a future version ? ;-) Especially as it seems to be a pretty locked up system : no export facility except to PPC...

    Oh...

    BTW...

    Just like that...

My manual mentions something about Russian or Soviet Topo Maps in its Table of Index, but there is nothing at the page (39 if I remember correctly...) mentionned... 8-O The part about Russian Ordnance Map is missing ! 8-O

Sounds like a great app !

Even though, now, I don't succeed in opening the damn French maps on my Georando DVD... But then I have not read that part of the manual so far... So, I will do some RTFM before I complain too loudly... ;-)

    Ok !

    That sounds much better !

Everything was s mentionned except that I did not care about the PPC/Palm option as I considered that it was for Export ! ;)

Thus, it seems to work !

It gives me a problem of map, now, but I'll look into that myself... ;) Basically, it tells me that some point are NOT in the same, which sounds correct as I have no maps imported so far (But I do have a DVD from IGN which should have the right ones... ;) )

BTW... I am using a French demo version... Maybe that mistakes come from that version ?

I mean I do not have any opportunity to open a "Pathaway PDB Track"... Only "Pathaway PPC Track"...

    Hello,

The problem is that I have no Pathaway PDB Tracks... I do have a Pathaway PPC Tracks which, when I try to use it, gives me an error message...

    QWError: -126
    PWDBLIB.dll: PW_ppc2txt error

That sounds fishy as I don't even have time to tell which file I want to open !

Right... An area around Paris... ;)

    I do like this...

I open QV-Explorer and do an import Pathaway PDB NMEA Log... That sound like the right one, no ?

The options for Palm have been left as is... And that means I did not make any change... But the think is that the GPS is being setup as a Garmin. Should I change that to NMEA ?
