How to set up Magellan/TTQV

  • ********Written by Andrew Kalinowski*********************************
For the Magellan Meridian I use the following settings:

To transfer Waypoints, routes and tracks
    - In TTQV, under GPS Settings GPS I have:
Com1 (this depends on the individual equipment - may be different)
    Baudrate 9600
    DTR - NOT checked
    GPS Protocol - Magellan PMGN
    Handshake mode - NOT checked
    Send delay [ms] - 300

    In the receiver, under:
Menu Setup Baud Rate 9600 Baud
    Menu Setup NMEA Off

The above allows to transfer Routes, Waypoints and tracks to and from the
receiver. Most of the time, it works even when on the receiver the NMEA is
set to V21.GSA but I keep NMEA Off unless I'm using TTQV in Online mode.
There were cases when the transfer would not work with NMEA on the receiver
set, so it's better to have it Off.

    For the TTQV online mode:
FIRST, in the receiver I go to: Menu Setup NMEA V21.GSA
SECOND: I make sure that the receiver has position lock - IF Magellan does
not have the position solution, it does NOT send NMEA !!!
Than, in TTQV I just press F4 key - it automatically sets TTQV into NMEA mode.

Most common USER ERRORS that I know about:
    Wrong ComPort set.
Try to transfer waypoints / routes / tracks with TTQV set to NMEA / Online mode
Try to use TTQV Online mode with Magellan when receiver does not have the position solution.

    Most common ComPort problem:
Program like HotSynch Manager for Palm Pilot (or similar) does not release
the port. It is NOT enough to exit such program. It has to be removed from
he Windows Start (Menu) Startup and computer has to be re-booted. I keep
HotSynch and other memory resident programs that may monitor / use com ports
OUT of the Startup and have shortcuts on the Desktop so I start them ONLY
when I need to use them. It also helps to keep computer running better.

    Other possible problems:
    - Faulty cable / connection
    - Faulty receiver
    - Faulty computer com port / configuration

    What I normally ask:
Any other devices that may be using the comport; do they work?
Do other programs communicate with the receiver?
Does the transfer work with TTQV or other programs with that cable and
    receiver on a different computer?

    Hope that helps a bit.
